Diallo salvages a rough opening day for Canadians at U.S. Open
Canada's Leylah Fernandez advances to the second round at Flushing Meadows
Despite struggling early, Fernandez's fighting spirit helped her survive a tough opponent.
Canada's Leylah Fernandez salvaged a rough opening day for Canadians at the U.S. Open on Monday, as the 19-year-old advanced to the second round with a hard-fought 7-5, 7-6 (3) victory over Oceane Dodin of France.
Fernandez, who reached the final of the U.S. Open last year, struggled early on against the 26-year-old Dodin, falling behind 5-2 in the first set. However, the Canadian battled back to win the next five games and take the set.
The second set was even tighter, with neither player able to break the other's serve. Fernandez eventually prevailed in a tiebreaker, winning the final six points to clinch the match.
Fernandez's victory was the only bright spot for Canadians on a difficult opening day at Flushing Meadows. Denis Shapovalov, the highest-ranked Canadian man, was upset in the first round by American Brandon Nakashima, while Bianca Andreescu, the 2019 U.S. Open champion, retired from her match against Harmony Tan of France with an injury.
Fernandez will face either Belinda Bencic of Switzerland or Greet Minnen of Belgium in the second round.
Here are some additional highlights from Fernandez's victory:
- Fernandez hit 23 winners to just 14 unforced errors.
- Fernandez won 71% of her first-serve points and 50% of her second-serve points.
- Fernandez broke Dodin's serve three times.
Fernandez's victory is a positive sign for Canadian tennis, as she is one of the most promising young players in the world. She has the potential to be a major force in the sport, and her performance at the U.S. Open this year is a testament to her talent and determination.
